Intravenous (IV) fluid therapy is when an IV line, attached to a bag containing a saline solution, is inserted into a service users’ vein. The KASE Care team are experienced in managing the care that is required for both children and adults who require IV fluid therapy when their needs cannot be satisfied by oral or enteral routes.
The body must be hydrated for it to work. Organs, such as the heart and kidneys, are at risk of failure when the body is dehydrated. For this reason, any service user that requires IV fluid therapy must be managed correctly by a team of healthcare professionals who can provide the level of support required.
There are several reasons why a service user would be prescribed IV fluid therapy, such as:
- Nil by Mouth (NBM) – this could be for medical or surgical reasons
- Vomiting or severe diarrhoea
- Hypovolaemia, which is caused because of blood loss and will likely require blood products along with IV fluid
