The need for end of life care is an incredibly sensitive subject and, when you or a loved is approaching the end of life, planning as much in advance where possible is advantageous for everyone involved. The service user, friends, family and carers will benefit by planning ahead for end of life care.

Creating an Advance Statement

The KASE Care team can help with the creation of an advance statement, which is a written statement setting out the preferences and wishes of the service user approaching end of life or any aspect of future care. This may include:

  • Where the service user wishes to be cared for – such as at home, hospital, nursing home or hospice
  • Practicalities – such as taking care of day-to-day tasks, how the service user prefers to be washed and care for any dependents when the service user becomes too ill
  • Any religious or spiritual beliefs the service user wishes to be reflected in the future

Advance Decision

An advance decision differs from an advance statement. This is a decision made by the service user to reject a specific type of treatment. The types of treatment, such as life-sustaining treatment, and scenarios in which the service user does not want treatment must be included in the advance decision.

The advance decision must be written down and signed by the service user (as long as they have the mental capacity to make such a decision) and by a witness. KASE Care can grant access to a healthcare professional that can help to advise and inform you as to the type of treatment, and why it would be offered, that you can choose to reject.

Caring for Family and Friends

As well as the service user themselves, KASE Care recognises that family and friends will also require support as they will, ultimately, be the ones that are left behind when the service user reaches the end of their life. Our team will ensure that they are not forgotten and will be given access to the help and support they need to come to terms with the fact that a loved one is coming to the end of their life.
