Service users living with Huntington’s disease are likely to require full-time, assisted living care in the latter stages of life as the condition stops part of the brain from working. The KASE Care team will create a tailored care plan, ensuring the service user benefits from the care and support as soon as it is required.
Someone who is diagnosed with Huntington’s disease can usually expect to live for another 15 to 20 years, which is when symptoms are likely to become fatal. The symptoms can include:
- Clumsiness
- Lapses on concentration and memory
- Depression
- Personality changes and/or mood swings
- Difficulty speaking, breathing and swallowing
- Involuntary jerking
- Trouble moving independently
Huntington’s disease is an inherited condition, caused by a faulty gene which results in parts of the brain becoming damaged over time. As the condition worsens and the service user enters the latter stages of their life, assisted living services will be required to tend to their needs.
