KASE Care offers specialised care for anyone living with Muscular Dystrophy (MD) or a related condition, helping them to live as fulfilling and independent a life as possible. Our team of healthcare professionals will devise a tailored care plan, discussed over with the service user and their family.
MD is the name given to a group of inherited genetic conditions which causes muscles in the body to weaken over time, resulting in a gradually increased level of disability. Some symptoms are more severe than others, the most serious of which will directly affect the heart and respiratory muscles. In the UK, roughly 70,000 people are living with MD or a related condition.
KASE Care’s team of healthcare professionals will be able to provide the level of care and assistance an individual living with MD requires. We can also grant access to medication and treatment to help manage the symptoms associated with MD which, although it will not cure the condition, it will ease physical disabilities.
Types of Muscular Dystrophy
There are several types of MD conditions, some of which are more common than others. Some of these include:
- Duchenne MD – a common form of MD which is mostly seen in boys and reduces life-expectancy to their 20’s or 30’s
- Becker MD – related to Duchenne MD but is less severe, developing later in childhood, and does not normally affect life expectancy
- Facioscapulohumeral MD – a slow, progressive type of MD that can develop at any age and is not usually life-threatening
- Myotonic Dystrophy – this type of MD can develop at any age and, depending on the severity of the condition, may be life-threatening – although this is not always the case
- Oculopharyngeal MD – a type of MD that usually develops between 50 and 60 years of age
- Limb-Girdle MD – this is a group of MD conditions that range from the life-threatening and quick progression to non-fatal and gradual; this commonly develops in late childhood or early adulthood
- Emery-Dreifuss MD – those living with this MD condition will develop it in childhood or early adulthood and will likely live until middle-age
