Motor Neurone Disease (MND)

KASE Care offers specialised care service for anyone living with Motor Neurone Disease (MND), also known as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), which is a degenerative condition affecting the brain and nervous system. Although there is no cure, yet, for MND, the KASE Care team can create a tailored care plan to help manage symptoms, allowing the service user to live as independent a life as possible.

More than half of those diagnosed with MND sadly die within two years of a diagnosis, commonly recognised between the ages of 20 and 40. Symptoms vary from case to case and become more apparent/severe towards the end of life. They include:

Muscle weakness
Muscle cramps
Saliva problems – such as the drooling of saliva and difficulty clearing the mouth and throat
Dysarthria – slurred and/or quiet speech as well as losing the ability to speak altogether
Dysphagia – a weakness of the bulbar muscles, such as the mouth, tongue and throat muscles, resulting in a difficulty to swallow
Respiratory problems
Cognitive change – people living with MND are likely to experience a change in how they think and behave in the latter stages of life

The Need for Care

The correct care should be sought after as soon as a diagnosis is made as symptoms can manifest quickly. At any one time, around 5,000 people in the UK are living with MND – two in every 100,000 people – and it affects people of all ages.

KASE Care will sit down with the service user and their loved ones to create a tailored care plan which will include home care and/or assisted living services where required, as well as palliative care and respite care for those that would normally be responsible for giving care. Even if the symptoms are not yet debilitating, the sad reality is that special care might be required in the future and, for this reason, we highly recommend not delaying getting in contact with a care provider.

Support for the Family

As well as the stress and difficulty that the service user will have as they come to terms with the gradual loss of their ability to complete normal day-to-day tasks themselves, we also understand this is equally as difficult for loved ones. Our team will be on hand to lend support for family and friends, who may have already been providing care in an unofficial capacity.
