KASE Care offers specialist care services for anyone living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), helping them to live as fulfilling and independent a life as possible.
MS is a lifelong condition that affects the brain and nervous system which can result in feeling tired, blurred vision and problems maintaining balance whilst standing, walking or running. While there are medications and treatments available to manage the symptoms of MS, it is ultimately an incurable condition and, thus, there may be the need for either regular home care visits or assisted living services.
MS is caused by the immune system attacking the brain and nerves, although it remains unclear why this happens. The condition is usually diagnosed in people in their 20’s and 30’s, with women as much as three times as likely as men to be diagnosed with MS. Life expectancy is slightly reduced for those with the condition.
Types of MS
There are two types of MS that people are diagnosed with – individual relapses and gradual progression.
Individual relapses is the most common type of MS, with eight out of 10 people with MS diagnosed with this type. This is when a person suffers from attacks or exacerbations of symptoms, which may include but not limited to:
- Loss of balance
- Blurred vision
- Fatigue
- Difficulty with thinking
- Numbness and/or tingling
- Lack of bladder control
- Muscle stiffness
Gradual progression is, as you would suspect, is a gradual worsening of symptoms over several years with no periods of remission. This affects between one and two people diagnosed with MS.
